GREETINGS, EVERYONE! Thanks to all of you who came out to pray at the school last Sunday evening. We had a really good turnout representing several area churches. Around forty folks total, with 16 from FBC, prayed for Maysville School, students, teachers, administrators, staff, board members, and those who fill in the gaps by substitute teaching or bus driving. Continued prayers are requested, especially for those who are new to the area or to the school. As a homeschool dad, I would also like to emphasize the need to pray for our students and families who choose, for a variety of reasons, to home educate. Also, pray for those students who may be enrolled in Christian or other private schools. Unique challenges accompany each situation. Pray for the provision of daily grace for daily needs for all those involved.
THE LORD'S DAY (8/28):
  • Bible Study for All Ages, 9:30 am. Nursery through Senior Adult, we have a group for you!
  • Worship Together at 10:40 in the Sanctuary. We will be studying Luke 14:1-6 together on the subject "Another Sabbath Healing." Jesus is eating with a ruler of the Pharisees. There he finds someone in need of healing. After asking the lawyers and the Pharisees if it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath, Jesus heals that person as an act of mercy. And no one could say a word to him.
Scriptures for Sunday.  Here are the Scriptures we will be reading that will shape our corporate worship. Take a few moments to read and meditate on them as you prepare for worship tomorrow. Click anywhere on the link to see a printable version of these passages on biblegateway.com
    • Call to Worship: Psalm 81:1,10-16
    • Scripture Reading: Exodus 2:1-22
    • Assurance of Pardon: Psalm 32:1-2
    • Sermon Text: Luke 14:1-6
    • Benediction: Numbers 6:24-26
  • Baptist Catechism Questions 25-26
  • Question 25: Who is the Redeemer of God’s elect?

Answer: The only Redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord Jesus Christ, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man, and so was and continues to be God and man, in two distinct natures and one person, forever. Scripture: Galatians 3:13; 1 Timothy 2:5; 3:16; John 1:14; Romans 9:5; Colossians 2:9.
  • Question 26: How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?

Answer: Christ, the Son of God became man by taking to himself a true body and a reasonable soul. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and was born of her, yet without sin. Scripture: Hebrews 2:14; 4:14; 7:26; Matthew 26:38; Luke 2:52; John 1:14; 12:27; Luke 1:31, 35; 2:52; Colossians 2:9.
  • Family Movie Night, 7 pm: "American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story." Take a look at the trailer for this heartwarming story of faith, family, and determination. Come on out and bring a friend. Popcorn and water will be provided. While we have some padded chairs available, you may want to bring your favorite lawn/camping chair. Take a look at the trailer here.

FIGHTER VERSE: We are not currently reciting the Fighter Verses during the worship service, but I encourage you to do so in your Sunday School class and your Bible study group. Personally commit these verses to your heart, and I believe God will bless you as you do.
This week's verse is 1 Peter 4:16
Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

READ THROUGH THE BIBLE The Five-Day Bible Reading Plan is attached to this e-mail for your convenience. You may want to access additional resources to support your reading available at this website.

BONUS: You have heard me recommend The Briefing on multiple occasions for a daily podcast analyzing news and events from a Christian worldview. I stand by that recommendation, and I would also like to recommend Al Mohler's long form interview series entitled "Thinking in Public." Here is a link to Dr. Mohler's interview with Andrew Roberts on Roberts' recent book "The Last King of America: The Misunderstood Reign of George III." A fascinating topic for us as Americans since it was during his reign that our nation won its independence.

See you in church!

Grace and peace,

Pastor Greg

GREETINGS, EVERYONE! I want to mention a couple of things to our men right out of the chute:
  • MACH 4 Men's Ministry is meeting at Fairport Baptist Church this evening (Saturday) at 6 pm. All men and boys are invited to attend. Supper will be provided. (I regret that I won't be able to attend as today is Lorrie and my wedding anniversary and we are celebrating this evening).
  • "The Man of God and Work" Biblical Manhood Conference, Saturday, Aug. 20, 8:30 am - 2:45 pm, at Frederick Boulevard Baptist in St. Joseph. Guys, you don't want to miss this conference. Greg Gilbert, author of the Crossway title "The Gospel" and pastor of Third Avenue Baptist in Louisville, KY, will be the keynote speaker. Several other pastors will be breakout leaders, including yours truly talking about "Balancing Work and Rest." Lunch from Chick-Fil-A is included in the conference fee of $25. If you want to sign up by paper, make your check out to First Baptist Church and put "men's conference" in the memo line.
  • *NOTE: If you would like to go to the conference, but need scholarship funds to attend, please let me know.

If you would like to carpool to the conference, we will meet at the church at 7:20 am, leave no later than 7:30, and likely be back to Maysville by 3:30 pm
Sign up in the foyer or on eventbrite by Monday, August 15. For more information, visit the event Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Biblical-Manhood-Conference-St-Joseph-MO-108406211384369/
THE LORD'S DAY (8/14):
  • Bible Study for All Ages, 9:30 am. Nursery through Senior Adult, we have a group for you!
  • Worship Together at 10:40 in the Sanctuary. We will be studying Luke 13:22-30 together on the subject "The Door of Salvation." Only those who come to God through His appointed means (repentance from sin and faith in Christ alone) will be saved. Jesus describes the means of salvation as "the narrow door."
  • Scriptures for Sunday.  Here are the Scriptures we will be reading that will shape our corporate worship. Take a few moments to read and meditate on them as you prepare for worship tomorrow. Click anywhere on the link to see a printable version of these passages on biblegateway.com
    • Call to Worship: Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19
    • Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 5:1-7
    • New Testament Reading: Hebrews 11:29-12:2
    • Assurance of Pardon: 1 John 1:7-10
    • Sermon Text: Luke 13:22-30
    • Benediction: Numbers 6:24-26
  • Baptist Catechism Questions 21-22
We are working our way through the Baptist Catechism of 1693, also known as “Keach’s Catechism” after Elias Keach, its primary editor. These questions and answers have been slightly updated. Take a few moments to read through these questions as we prepare to affirm our faith together.
  • Question 21: Into what condition did the fall bring mankind?
    Answer:
The fall brought mankind into a condition of sin and misery.
    Scripture: Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:18-19; 7:18; Isaiah 53:6; 64:6; John 3:6-7; Ephesians 2:1-3; 1 Corinthians 2:14.

Question 22: What is the sinfulness of that condition into which all mankind has fallen?
Answer: The sinfulness of the condition into which all mankind fell is the guilt of Adam’s first sin, the lack of original righteousness, and the corruption of our whole nature (which is commonly called original sin), together with all actual transgressions which come from this nature.
    Scripture: Romans 5:19; 3:10; Ephesians 2:1; Isaiah 53:6; Psalm 51:5; Matthew 15:19.

Comment: The Bible says that "in Adam all die" (1 Cor. 15:22) and that "one transgression yields condemnation for all men" (Rom. 5:18) and that "one man’s disobedience made many sinners" (Rom. 5:19). These statements lead us to conclude that God, in a way beyond our comprehension, established a unity between Adam and his posterity which makes it just for us to receive the imputation of his guilt and corruption. He was in some sense our representative head. We sinned in him and fell with him.

GREETINGS, EVERYONE! Today is a "recovery" day for those of us who went to camp at Grand Oaks this week. Camp is great, but it can be a little tiring, so we need time to recover. Our group was among the last to leave the camp since Kyle checks out all the vehicles at the gate to make sure all the campers are going with the correct people for pickup, and I had some final paperwork in my role as camp director to complete. We arrived back in Maysville just shortly after 1:30 pm. We had a great time at camp, hearing God's word preached and taught, participating in some awesome planned recreational activities, and eating some delicious meals. Our theme was "Follow Jesus," and Camp Pastor Scott Gilbert (Frederick Blvd BC pastor) did an amazing job of bringing God's word on that theme each evening on the pre-teen level for our 10, 11, and 12 year old campers. Tanya Griffin (Stewartsville pastor's wife) was our Girls' Bible Study leader, and Zack Budd (Green Valley children's pastor) was our Boys' Bible Study leader. Both did an outstanding job of teaching the children who Jesus is, what He did, and what makes the difference for us today. Each day features a missions lesson, but our camp missionary fell ill on Sunday, so he was not able to join us for the week. The Lord provided excellent substitutes for that time of the day to share their experience in missions, and they were a joy to work with.
Thank you, church, for underwriting much of the cost to send campers to Grand Oaks. We may not know until glory the full impact of your generosity and kingdom-mindedness.

THE LORD'S DAY (8/7):
  • Bible Study for All Ages, 9:30 am. Nursery through Senior Adult, we have a group for you!
  • Worship Together at 10:40 in the Sanctuary. We will be studying Luke 13:10-21 together on the subject "Jesus, the Sabbath, and the Kingdom of God." As it happens so often in the Gospels, Jesus heals someone on the Sabbath, a religious leader is angry about it, and this leads to a lesson on God's Kingdom.
  • Grand Oaks Campers will have the opportunity during the welcome time to share something from their experience and to say thank you to the church for helping to send them.
  • The Johnstons will be sharing about their work in Central Asia during the last several minutes of our worship service.
  • Scriptures for Sunday.  Here are the Scriptures we will be reading that will shape our corporate worship. Take a few moments to read and meditate on them as you prepare for worship tomorrow. Click anywhere on the link to see a printable version of these passages on biblegateway.com
    • Call to Worship: Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23
    • Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 1:1, 10-20
    • New Testament Reading: Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16
    • Assurance of Pardon: Psalm 34:18-19
    • Sermon Text: Luke 13:10-21
    • Benediction: Numbers 6:24-26
  • Baptist Catechism Questions 17-19
We are working our way through the Baptist Catechism of 1693, also known as “Keach’s Catechism” after Elias Keach, its primary editor. These questions and answers have been slightly updated. Take a few moments to read through these questions as we prepare to affirm our faith together.
Question 19: Did all mankind fall in Adam’s first sin?
Answer: All mankind, descending from Adam by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him in his first sin.  Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:21-22; Romans 5:12, 18-19.
Comment: God considered all mankind as being in Adam so that when Adam went bad we all went bad in him. The nature that we have by virtue of belonging to Adam’s race is morally corrupt. We are under the wrath of God "by nature" (Ephesians 2:3) from the time we were conceived in the womb. This is why conversion and salvation must be much more than a "decision" for Christ. It must be a new creation, a rebirth, an exchange of hearts.

Question 20: Into what condition did the fall bring mankind?
Answer: The fall brought mankind into a condition of sin and misery.
    Scripture: Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:18-19; 7:18; Isaiah 53:6; 64:6; John 3:6-7; Ephesians 2:1-3; 1 Corinthians 2:14.
  • Visit founders.org/library/the-baptist-catechism/ for the complete catechism text.
  • Visit desiringgod.org/articles/a-baptist-catechism for the text of the commentary.
  • FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT, Sunday, Aug. 7 at 7 pm. "Mom's Night Out" is a clean, family comedy from 2014 which follows a hardworking mom and her friends on a "night out" while their husbands watch the kids. A fair amount of hilarious mayhem ensues. Sarah Drew, Sean Astin, Patricia Heaton, and Trace Adkins lead the cast. (You may also recognize Robert Amaya and Alex Kendrick from the movie "Courageous"). Bring your lawn chairs, bean bag chairs, recliners, etc., to the fellowship hall where we'll pop popcorn, and have snacks and soft drinks available in a relaxed atmosphere. Come on out and bring a friend! (This is a licensed public screening of this movie through our CVLI license program).

MONDAY (8/8)
  • Sewing Circle will meet at 5 pm.
  • Monday "Sunday School" online via ZOOM at 7 pm. See Pastor Kyle to join this virtual Bible study group.  To join Zoom Meeting, follow this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87573789453?pwd=Zjg5ZWZ2N1h5WklxOEFjM3IrVUt1QT09      Meeting ID: 875 7378 9453       Passcode: 478672

SUNDAY (8/14)
  • MEMBER MEETING, Sunday, Aug. 14 around NOON. Join us after the morning worship service for a fellowship meal and our bi-monthly member meeting. The Strangers Adult Sunday School Class hosted our last meal, so one or more of the other adult classes are welcome to volunteer (Read: NEED TO VOLUNTEER) to host this one. Hosting involves preparing the drinks, getting the table service ready, and cleaning up afterward. Church will provide drinks and table service, and members will bring everything else.
  • Biblical Manhood Conference, Saturday, Aug. 20 at Frederick Boulevard Baptist in St. Joseph.        Greg Gilbert, author of the Crossway title "The Gospel" and pastor of Third Avenue Baptist in Louisville, KY, will be the keynote speaker.
