GREETINGS, EVERYONE! This Sunday, our pulpit guest will be Joe Nogalski. Joe is an experienced pastor with 34 years of vocational ministry experience, and 25 of those as a senior pastor. A couple of years ago, Joe resigned as pastor of Memorial Baptist in New Haven, MO, to take on the role previously occupied by Bob Springate as the area representative for Missouri Baptist Children's Home. With campuses in Bridgeton, Peculiar, and Mount Vernon, I believe the ministry of MBCH is among the most important ministries that we help fund through our gifts to the Missouri Baptist Convention and directly through our monthly "birthday" offerings. The lives of children and families are deeply affected by the gospel through the ministry of MBCH.
But allow me to share with you the critical situation described in a recent letter from MBCH president Russell Martin to us, and to all MBC-related churches:
"We are in a critical situation at MBCH. Because of a lack of staff, we have had to close some of the houses on our campuses. It breaks my heart to know that we have outstanding programs, we have empty beds, and there are children referred to us who need our services, but we do not have the caring, Christian people to care for them. These are children who need to hear the gospel and we don't have the opportunity to share it with them.

"MBCH is seeking to fill  live-in and shift positions on our campuses. Live-in staff works one full week and then has the next full week off. The staff filing these positions can live almost anywhere as they commute to and from home just once a week. The live-in positions are great opportunities for married couples, although we also employ singles as well. Shift staff typically works eight or ten hours per shift.

"Applicants must be at least 21 years old and be able to pass a background check. They don't need to have the answers to all of life's questions - we will provide the necessary training. We just need people to love these children like Jesus does. These positions are paid an hourly rate with a generous benefit package for full-time employees."

If this is something that interests you, or you know of someone who might be qualified, please visit the MBCH website mbch.org or call their human resources department at 1-800-264-6224. What an amazing opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children for the sake of Christ and the Gospel!

We are working our way through the Baptist Catechism of 1693, also known as “Keach’s Catechism” after Elias Keach, its primary editor. Take a few moments to read through these questions as we prepare to affirm our faith together.

    Q. 17  Did our first parents continue in the estate wherein they were created?
    A. Our first parents, being left to the freedom of their own will, fell from the estate wherein they were created, by sinning against God.
    Gen. 3:6, 7, 8, 13; Eccles. 7:29; Rom. 5:12

    Q.18  What is sin?
    A. Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God.
    1 John 3:4; Rom. 5:13; 14:23; 1 Pet. 1:16; Matt. 5:48; 1 Cor. 10:31.
Comment: Sin is any attitude or desire or action that explicitly breaks a commandment of Scripture, or comes from a heart of unbelief or is not done for the glory of God.

    Q. 19  What was the sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created?
    A. The sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created, was their eating the forbidden fruit.
    Gen. 3: 6, 12, 13, 16, 17

  • GRAND OAKS CHILDREN'S CAMP Please pray for the nearly 140 children who will be in attendance this week, including seven of our own children, two adult staff, and one tenager serving as an ACIT. This camp is for children who have completed grades 4-6. Children of this age are full of questions related to their own salvation, the walk of discipleship, and what it means for them to be personally accountable to God. Pastor Scott Gilbert of Frederick Boulevard Baptist will be our camp pastor. I know Scott as a solid preacher of God's word and a true brother in the Lord. He will focus his messages on "Who is Jesus?" and "What does it mean to follow Him?" Please pray for Scott, and also for Zach Budd, children's pastor at Green Valley, who will be Boys' Bible Study Leader, and Tanya Griffin, pastor's wife at Stewartsville, who will be Girls' Bible Study Leader, as they teach and lead throughout the week. Pray for Pastor Kyle and Tyler Bridges as they lead in the music area, for Sue as she serves in the technology area, and for myself, David Long, Chris Ellis, and Susy Jaggars, as we give overall direction to the camp.

FIGHTER VERSE: We are not currently reciting the Fighter Verses during the worship service, but I encourage you to do so in your Sunday School class and your Bible study group. Personally commit these verses to your heart, and I believe God will bless you as you do.
We have been learning verses from Psalm 91. This week's verses are Psalm 91:7-8
"A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked."

GREETINGS, EVERYONE! We had a great Vacation Bible School this week. Thanks to Dava Hacket and the whole team who taught, helped, led, cooked, sang, operated technology, and any other area of service not covered! Our total child enrollment from age 4 through 6th grade was 33, with just about that many youth and adults served in one capacity or another. Gospel seed was sown this week; prayerfully, we look forward to the harvest of souls!

Here is what's coming up this week and beyond:

THE LORD'S DAY (7/24):
  • Bible Study for All Ages, 9:30 am. Nursery through Senior Adult, we have a group for you!
  • VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL PROGRAM, 10:40 am - 11 am. The children will sing the songs and share the scriptures they learned in VBS this week.
  • Worship Together at 11:00 in the Sanctuary. We will begin the worship service proper a little late to accomodate the VBS program. Sermon title will be "Repent or Perish" from Luke 13:1-9, in which Jesus issues these words of warning to the crowds in response to a then-current news story about some people who had recently died violent deaths. Jesus' call to repentance is as timely now as it was then. Please pray for all those who will be in attendance tomorrow as it is more likely that we will have a greater than average number of unsaved folks in the congregation. Pray for the Holy Spirit to be about His office work of convicting souls of sin, righteousness, and judgment to come.
  • Scriptures for Sunday.  Here are the Scriptures we will be reading that will shape our corporate worship. Take a few moments to read and meditate on them as you prepare for worship tomorrow. Click anywhere on the link to see a printable version of these passages on biblegateway.com
    • Call to Worship: Psalm 138:1-2
    • Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:15-29
    • Assurance of Pardon: Psalm 85:1-3
    • Sermon Text: Luke 13:1-9
    • Benediction: Numbers 6:24-26
  • Baptist Catechism Questions and Answers (from www.desiringgod.org/articles/a-baptist-catechism). We return to our consecutive journey through the questions and answers of the Baptist Catechism this week as our affirmation of faith in the worship service.
    • Question 15: What are God’s works of providence?
      • Answer: God’s works of providence are the holy, wise, and powerful acts by which he preserves and governs all his creatures, and all their actions.
        • Scripture: Nehemiah 9:6; Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 1:3; Psalm 103:19; Matthew 10:29-30.
    • Comment: It would be helpful to discuss this with your child in relation to the common concept of "luck." Is there such a thing as luck in a world ruled by the providence of God? "The lot is cast into the lap, but the decision is wholly from the Lord" (16:33). You will also need to stress that many of God’s acts of providence may not look "holy and wise" (like storms that kill thousands of people). But then stress that God has his secret purposes (Deut. 29:29) that we are never great enough to see, and the Judge of all the earth always does right (Genesis 18:25).
    • Question 16: What special act of providence did God exercise towards man when he was first created?
      • Answer: When God had created man, he made a covenant with him that he should live and enjoy all the benefits of creation, but that he would die if he forsook the obedience that comes from faith. God commanded him not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and thus forsake his child-like dependence upon God for all things.
        • Scripture: Genesis 2:15-17; Galatians 3:12; Romans 5:12.
    • Comment: The "knowledge of good and evil" is the ability to judge independently what is beneficial (good) and harmful (evil) for yourself. What God is forbidding is that man should choose to be independent from God in his evaluation of things. He is commanding man to walk by faith in the wise and loving care of his heavenly Father. (See the use of this phrase in Gen. 3:5, 22; 2 Sam. 14:17; Is. 7:15; 2 Sam 19:35.

      • Scripture: Genesis 1:27-28; Colossians 3:10; Ephesians 4:24.
